Amanda Chappell – ACT Director Detroit Metro and English/Reading Instructor
Amanda Chappell started her career teaching 11th grade English at Martin Luther King, Jr. High in Detroit. She moved on to teach English as a Second Language at Schoolcraft College in Livonia. She had a great opportunity to teach ACT prep in 2007 and since then has gain great experience in the world of ACT. Ms. Chappell is a graduate of Wayne State University with a B.A. in English and obtained her Masters in Communication with an emphasis on Media in 2009.
Michael Armstrong - Math/Science Instructor
Michael Armstrong is in his 7th year as a high school teacher. He has taught Algebra 1, Aglebra 2, and Geometry in Southfield, Ecorse and is now teaching in the IB program in Utica. He and his wife have 5 children (2 boys and 3 girls) between the ages of 4 and 14. Mr. Armstrong graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2006 with a degree in Education and from Oakland University in 1995 in Human Resources.
Andrew Capelli – English/Reading Instructor
Andrew Capelli is a National Merit Scholar and Spartan Academic Scholar, having achieved Mensa-qualifying scores on both the ACT and SAT exams. He holds a B.A. in Political Theory from James Madison College at Michigan State University. At MSU, he was a co-founder and president of the Mock Trial Team, earning multiple regional awards. He obtained a J.D. from the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Law, where he was an active participant in the Urban Law Clinic. Mr. Capelli has been a practicing attorney in Michigan for over 15 years, focusing primarily in real estate and corporate matters. He has been a lecturer for the Institute of Continuing Legal Education, has taught paralegal classes at the Lawton Career Institute and is a frequent public speaker for various professional organizations throughout the Midwest. Married with two children, Mr. Capelli also volunteers with Winning Futures, a Michigan-based nonprofit program which pairs members of the business community with high school students to promote strategic career planning.
Marty Cosgriff – English/Reading Instructor
Charles Martin Cosgriff graduated from the University of Detroit with honors in 1984, and earned his teaching certificate from there in 1987. Since then, he has taught for more than 25 years in the Hamtramck Public Schools, Ferndale Public Schools, and the Warren Consolidated School system in southeast Michigan. Mr. Cosgriff has taught many subjects, including History, American Government, English, and Economics. He has also taught other content areas, including GED Prep courses as well as ACT Test Prep. He currently has four books in print, three of which are novels while the fourth is nonfiction.
Jeff Gumola – Math/Science Instructor
Jeff Gumola has a degree in Mathematics from Wayne State University. He has been teaching high school level mathematics for the past 4 years at Wayne as well, while tutoring and attending graduate school at the university. Mr. Gumola loves math and science and brings a lot of enthusiasm, as well as a common sense approach to our Math and Science ACT Prep Instruction. Besides having a great demand for excellence in his students, he is also very approachable, and has a great rapport with them.
Shannon Johnson - Math/Science and English/Reading Instructor
Shannon Johnson has over 3 years experience with helping students prepare for their ACT exams. Ms. Johnson enjoys working with high school students and enjoys seeing students go on to accomplish their goals and likes to tutor all four sections of the ACT. Ms. Johnson makes sure to accommodate all learning styles and give a thorough review of what to expect on the test. Ms. Johnson is a full time student in her senior year majoring in pre-med at the University of Minnesota. When she's not tutoring you can find Ms. Johnson working in a cancer research lab or in the park walking dogs.
Gregory Renteria - English/Reading Instructor
Greg has a BS in Business from the University of Minnesota, an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business and one year of education at MIT in their scholarship/intern program. Greg is one of our expert online instructors who has developed a keen sense of engaging students and maintaining their attention during his lively and enjoyable tutoring sessions. When he's not online working with our students with their rhetorical skills or usage mechanics Greg enjoys watching sports and especially rooting for his hometown Twins and St. Paul Saints.
Donna Webb – Math/Science and English/Reading Instructor
Donna Webb attended Lawrence Technological University and Oakland University, earning degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. She taught at both the collegiate and high school levels, as well as worked in the automotive industry, before realizing her dream of working independently from home as a high school tutor. For the past 12 years Ms. Webb has been fortunate to work as a private math tutor helping hundreds of students recognize the “awesomeness” that is mathematics. She has been described by students as “drunk on math” and can’t think of a higher compliment. She understands that each student is a true individual and that one explanation won’t work for everyone. She has a unique style of teaching and is able to relate to students of all ages with ease. Ms Webb is currently writing a series of Algebra textbooks that she hopes will help not only to teach, but to inspire.
I think this is one of the best programs Richmond County Schools has and I will have my third grade child do the same thing. I have already told my friends and family.
